The things that give us the most joy and allow us to recall fond treasured memories embracing us in a sense of comfort and safety. This wonderful feeling also applies to food - the food in our life.
We all have cherished memories of foods we ate as children and dishes and treats our grandmothers made for us. We can often recall a first meal shared with a loved one, a romantic dinner or picnic or even celebratory family meal. More often than not this beautiful food has simple ingredients and delightful flavours.
Here are some of my simple food pleasures.
There is something wonderful and fulfilling in spreading a slice of warm toast with marmalade for breakfast each morning. You've probably done it a thousand times.
But have you relished the warm toast with its hint of crispness and soft interior smothered in soft velvety marmalade. The tang of the butter contrasting with the rich sweet flavour of the marmalade. I love seville marmalade as it imparts an extra tang to the mix where many other marmalades are just too sweet and overwhelm the flavour of the toast and butter.
I love sandwiches and as a child i would create huge sandwiches filled with lots of lovely fresh ingredients from our garden. My mum would laugh at me and say "that will never fit in your mouth!'. She may have been right and it may have taken some considerable time to eat them but they were always delicious.
One of my favourite sandwiches today is a tuna sandwich. I've tried all kinds of tuna sandwiches from all kinds of places and I can firmly say not one meets my expectations of what a tuna sandwich should be.
For me a tuna sandwich has to have several ingredient and be made from fresh brown bread to be supreme!
Here's what goes into mine:
Tuna (half a can) usually the cat get the other half.
Green pepper - diced.
Spring Onion - sliced.
Mayonnaise.
Not forgetting the bread of course.
Helen - Culinary Capers
